A gas furnace work by burning the natural gas that comes from the burners. The flames from the burners should remain inside the firebox. If the flames cannot access enough oxygen to remain lit, they’ll expand outside the firebox to reach it, a dangerous situation called “flame rollout.” The flame rollout switch detects when this happens and immediately shuts off the flow of gas to the burners.

The Limit Switch

You don’t want your furnace to overheat, and the limit switch is designed to prevent this. The limit switch triggers when the heat exchanger becomes too hot. This can mean that not enough air is moving around the exchanger to cool it off (this can happen if the air filter is clogged) or the exchanger isn’t venting properly. Whatever the cause, the limit switch will prevent further damage.

The Flame Sensor

When the furnace begins a heating cycle, the control board opens a gas valve to send natural gas to the burners, then signals to the electronic ignition system to light the gas. However, if the ignition system fails, unburned gas will continue to flood into the combustion chamber, which creates a risk of an explosion. To stop this, a device called the flame sensor monitors if the burners have ignited. If it doesn’t detect flames, it will send a signal that shuts off the gas valve and ends the flow of gas to the burners. Older furnaces used a similar device called a thermocouple to do the same job.

Flue Exhaust Pressure Sensor

One of the ways a furnace gas can allow toxic gases into a home is if its flue becomes blocked. The flue allows the combustion byproducts in the heat exchanger to escape from the furnace and the house. A blocked flue will start to push gas back into the furnace and eventually into the home. The pressure sensor registers if the inducer motor that draws exhaust gas into the flue is operating correctly. A pressure change means exhaust flowing the wrong way, in which case the sensor will shut down the entire furnace.

No matter how hot it gets outside, you can always have your home feel extra cool.

Except that’s not how an air conditioner works. There are limits on how much cooling an AC can provide a house, and in this post we’re going to look at what it is. You can use this information to help you find the right settings for your thermostat during summer.

The Temperature Differential of an Air Conditioner

An air conditioner isn’t just limited by the lowest setting on the thermostat. That setting tells the air conditioner when to shut off, but it doesn’t mean the air conditioner can actually reach that lower temperature. The AC has another limitation, which is its temperature differential .

This is an HVAC industry term for how much an air conditioning system can change the temperature of the incoming air. Another way to think of it is how much lower the AC can make the temperature inside a house compared to the outdoor temperature. A natural gas furnace with 95% AFUE will convert 95% of the gas it combusts into heating during a year while losing 5% to exhaust. The important part is this is an average . The furnace will not always run at 95% AFUE when it turns on. Often, it will run at lower efficiency. If the furnace is not suited to the home—it may be too powerful, or an amateur gave it a sloppy installation—it will rarely get near its AFUE rating and end up costing more money to run than a well-installed furnace with lower efficiency.

The AFUE rating of electric furnaces is a good example of how efficiency ratings can be tricky. All-electric furnaces have AFUE ratings of 100%. They don’t waste any electrical power because they lose no energy to exhaust. This doesn’t mean an electric furnace is an automatic cash-saver. “What’s so hard about setting the thermostat in winter?” you might ask. “When it’s too cold, I turn it up, and then I turn it back down if it gets too hot.”

That sounds simple enough. Common sense. But common sense isn’t always right , and in the case of adjusting the temperatures in your home to manage proper winter heating in Indianapolis, IN , it can lead to plenty of money wasted and excess strain placed on the HVAC system, leading to early repairs and possibly an early replacement.

Fortunately, it’s not difficult to learn energy-saving thermostat tips for the winter. We’ll go through them below and help you start saving power.

Does a Gas Furnace Make the Air in My Home Drier?

You’ve probably heard this before: “Running a gas furnace during the winter may keep you warm, but it also dries out the air.” Since winter conditions are already drier than the rest of the year because more moisture has solidified out of the air, this can create serious problems for a house. Low humidity makes it harder to keep warm, which means running the furnace even more often. Low humidity also creates potential health problems by drying up sinus membranes, and it can cause damage to wood and painted surfaces.

But is it true that a gas furnace lowers indoor humidity?

The answer isn’t a straightforward one.

Using natural gas to heat the air does not dry the air

The first part of addressing the question is to note that nothing about the way a gas furnace transfers heat to the air that is sent through the ducts removes moisture from it. The gas burners create hot combustion gas that gathers in a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger becomes hot, and the metal exterior transfers its heat to the air passing around it. This does not lower the humidity of the air.

Some combustion furnaces can lead to dry air entering the house

However, the way many gas furnaces work can contribute to dry outdoor air entering the home. These furnaces use atmospheric combustion , and they have been the standard furnace type until recently. If you have an older furnace, it probably uses atmospheric combustion.

What this means is that the burners in the furnaces draw the air they require for combustion from the air around the furnace—i.e. from inside the house. You can tell an atmospheric furnace by looking into it: if you can see the flames of the burners, the furnace is drawing air from the house. This creates an air deficit in the building, allowing outdoor air a chance to move in through any thermal gap in the home’s envelope. Because this outside air is drier than the indoor air, it lowers the house’s humidity level.

The sealed combustion furnace avoids this

Many newer furnaces have sealed combustion: the burners are in a sealed chamber and not exposed to the air of the home. They draw the air they need through a PVC pipe that leads to the outside. This type of combustion not only prevents a drop in humidity, but it’s also more efficient and safer. If you have trouble with dry air and you have an old furnace, we recommend making the upgrade to sealed combustion.

They do have ways to warn you that something is wrong; you just have to know how to read the signals. One of the most common ways for a furnace to indicate trouble is with unusual sounds.
